I may be speaking with bias, but those that I have had the opportunity to work with were genuine. But keep in mind - many are not. Read on as we look for ways to choose the best breeder of your english bulldog.

If you are in the market for an english bulldog, I'm certain that you have done your homework in regards to learning about the breed, their health concerns, temperment, and necessary requirements for them to live a long healthy life.

But how do you go about choosing a reputable breeder ?

Your initial impressions here are probably your best asset. Does this breeder show love, knowledge and concern for the breed ? Do you get that impression when you speak with them ? Do they answer your questions with a detailed explanation ? Or...are they giving off the vibe that they are strictly in this business for the money? Use caution here. Don't let that baby bulldog steal your heart, and then hand over the money simply because you "can't live without" that puppy.

English bulldog breeders may even go so far as screening YOU as the perspective buyer. This process is almost similar to that of adopting a child. The attentive breeder will want to know things like how much you know about the breed, your living conditions (city or country, apartment or house, etc.) and if you have children or other pets. Don't take this as a sign that the breeder is overbearing and micro-managing your purchase. This breeder simply wants his "babies" to go to the best home environment.

A reputable breeder will back their claims and agreements in writing. They will provide written contracts detailing the pup's lineage, health conditions, preventative shots as well maybe even a return policy. Another sign of a breeder with integrity.

Lastly, the best english bulldog breeders will have nothing to hide. They will welcome requests to see the puppy's mother and father, their living and playing conditions and be up-front with health issues and testing. Many are just like proud parents who will boastfully show pictures and tell stories of all the bullys they have owned in the past !

Picking your new best friend is tough enough, but picking them from the right person is even tougher. Use these tips to evaluate your breeder. Take time to feel what vibe they give you, and if their heart is really in the breed - or just the money.

Do your homework, and you'll have no problems choosing the best english bulldog breeders !

The English Bulldog and the Heat

Heat is the English Bulldog's worst enemy !

Any regular english bulldog owner will tell you that the above statement is oh-so-true !

English Bulldogs and any of the brachycephalic breeds (pushed in faces) have a difficult time breathing as it is with the physical construction of their face and respiratory system.
With the approaching summer season, keep in mind the temperature change not only effects us as humans, but bulldogs as well. Heat exhaustion is common and is felt 100 times over in these breeds.

I know that at this time of year, my girl is quarantined indoors until at least after 6 pm. (Unless she has to take care of some business.) She is a big fan of the air conditioning!

Another consideration to remember is temperatures inside a closed car can easily exceed 100 degrees. No place for humans, and certainly no place for the english bulldog !

Treat your baby as if she were a small child. No heat, no over-exertion, and no closed cars.

Fight the heat with air conditioning and cool temps - they rule in the English Bulldog household !

Beautiful English Bulldog Contest

30th Drake Relays Beautiful Bulldog Contest

This contest - held Monday, April 20, 2009, kicks off the Drake Relays festivities at Drake University where a bulldog is the mascot.

Some pictures of the Beautiful Bulldog Contest are by the Associated Press - Enjoy !

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 145px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_6yOV-oCMZwc/Se0WbmBLFHI/AAAAAAAAABY/KWUAsj90WE8/s200/BBulldog1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326938597566911602" />

Porterhouse sits on the throne after being crowned the winner of the 30th Drake Relays Beautiful Bulldog Contest. Many people will tell you the best way to find the perfect english bulldog, but many current owners are genuinely interested in bettering everything about the breed.

I wanted to post this link to an organization that rescues english bulldogs regularly.

The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network

This is a non profit organization comprised largely of volunteers that finds homes for more than 1000 english bulldogs a year.

The organization also assists with medical care, food, shelter, and training while the rescued Bulldogs are awaiting adoption. The english bulldog is also steeped in history and tradition. Centuries ago, this breed was used in the sport of "bull-baiting" - a sport in which the english bulldog grabbed the nose of a tethered bull and attempted to bring it down and suffocate it.

Britain outlawed this sport in 1835.

After which, the english bulldog slowly evolved into the mild-mannered, loving pal we know today. The english bulldog continues to shed its work and sport ethic, but remains a stocky, tenacious player, regularly adopted as mascots of sports teams and the United States Marines.

Dedicated owners and fans of the english bulldog know that their physical appearance contradicts their loving personalities. Then english bulldog is a complex breed, and with a little knowledge of their history, strengths, and weaknesses, potential owners can make an informed decision if the english bulldog is the dog for them.

Now that you have a "reader's digest" version of the history of the english bulldog, let me briefly touch on an english bulldog overview... I will try to address each of these characteristics more in depth on later posts. For now, here are some english bulldog highlights -

The english bulldog life span is typically 10 years.

Colors range from solids like white, fawn, red, and fallow to brindles of all these colors.

Their coats are straight, smooth and short.

The english bulldog males typically weigh around 50 pounds, and stand 11 to 14 inches high. Female heights are similar, but they are usually lighter at around 40 pounds.

Common health related problems for the english bulldog are - hip dysplasia, allergies, cherry eye, and skin and tail infections.

The english bulldog is trainable and loyal, but they have an exceptional stubbornness about them. Be loving, but stern.

As you can imagine, the english bulldog is not a lean, mean athlete. This is one area that potential buyers of an english bulldog falter. Their pushed in faces and physical facial anatomy restrict their breathing. (A ten-dollar word for this is "brachycephalic.") The english bulldog is truly a spectator - for those of you who love sports. They are content to just watch the action, but like to mix it up once in a great while !

Another tip for soon to be english bulldog owners that goes along with their non-sporting abilities - they are severely temperature sensitive ! The english bulldog doesn't do heat ! Overheating is typical among any of the brachycephalic breeds. They are huge fans of air-conditioning, and their well being should be as closely watched as you would watch a small child.

Well...that's all the basics for now.

Stay tuned for more on the magnificent english bulldog...!

English Bulldog Owners Blog

Welcome to English Bulldog Owners.
